Really psyched about seeing Nosaj Thing next month at the El Rey.  Thanks to Milk and Eggs Co. for pointing out this stellar vid.

Joy Formidable Live at the Detroit Bar
I finally had a chance to see one of my favorite bands of the last two years live.  The Joy Formidable performed a highly energetic and LOUD set at the Detroit Bar in Costa Mesa Tuesday night.  In fact, I think my ears are still ringing from the show.  Not only did seeing The Joy Formidable live make me realize how great of a live band they are but also how miniature lead singer/vocalist Ritzy Bryan is in real life.  It was a lot of fun seeing her rocking out and energetically triggering guitar pedals to the songs.  If you ever have the chance to see The Joy Formidable live, definitely do so.
Here’s a short (and low quality) video clip I took at the show:

Tycho live at The Stone Bar, Los Angeles
Last night I had the opportunity to check out an audio visual showcase by one of my favorite labels, Ghostly International.
Opening the show was The Sight Below whose floating melodies and muffled techno beats set the mood for the evening.  The cavernous atmosphere of The Stone Bar fit well against the dark harmonies of The Sight Below.
Shigeto played next and treated the audience to an electro-acoustic performance of mashed up, free-form, futuristic hip hop.  At least that’s the best way I can describe his tunes.  He was accompanied by his friend on electric guitar and himself on drums.
Tycho came on third accompanied by live drums and bass.  As expected, the audience was dazzled with kaleidoscopic visuals set nicely to Tycho’s nostalgia-infused dream pop.  Although the live instrumentation brought a different dimension to Tycho’s tracks, the performance could have benefited from a full-time guitar player adding more textures to the music.  I think Tycho played guitar on a couple tracks but focused mostly on the live synth work.
After Tycho’s set my friend and I were ready to hit up Canter’s Deli for some late-night grub.   So we ended up leaving early and missed Mux Mool closing out the show.   View high resolution
